Why Am I Getting an iPad?
Southern Virginia University has partnered with Apple to provide a more enriching educational experience through the integration of technology in our classes. We deploy an iPad to each student that is enrolled at the school. This iPad and its associated equipment are entrusted to your care for the duration of your time at SVU. It is the property of the school and must not be traded, defaced, or sold. The following guide will describe how to use and care for your school-issued iPad.
Setting Up Your iPad
iPads deployed by the school must be set up within our remote management system so that the IT office can help you service your device. Here are the steps to set up your iPad:
- Turn on the iPad.
- Select your language and region.
- To continue with the setup you must connect to the Wi-Fi. Choose SVU_Students as your Wi-Fi network. You log into this network with your student email address (typically: firstname.lastname@svu.edu) and the password for your account. If you haven’t set up the password for your account yet, please visit office.com and use the ordinary process to reset your password. Let a member of IT staff help you if you have further questions.
- After you connect to the Wi-Fi you will see the page below. If you would like to use an iCloud backup of another Apple device to set up your iPad, you can use the "Restore from iCloud Backup" option. If you do not have a backup to restore or you would like to set up the iPad as a new device, use the option "Don't Transfer Apps & Data".
- After choosing how to set up your device, you will be taken to the “Remote Management” screen. Through remote management, our IT services will set up some of the apps you need automatically and your iPad will be recognized by our database. Hit next.
- Log in to Remote Management using your school email and password.
- Once you have logged in to your student account, you will have the option to sign into an existing Apple ID or create a new one if you do not have one already. Please note that svu.edu email accounts cannot be used to create Apple IDs. Instead, we recommend that you use a personal email as your Apple ID.
- Follow the steps to finish your iPad setup.
The school automatically installs many apps you will need to use during your classes, such as Canvas and the Knight App. You are permitted to download any apps available in the app store onto your iPad, though do be aware that some apps will require purchase or a subscription to use. The school does not cover the costs of the applications you install on your device. Your teachers may require you to download other applications to use for their classes, but these applications will rarely require purchase to use. Remember to be cautious when downloading programs onto a school-owned device. Always ensure that they are coming from a reputable source and remember the school's honor code when deciding what content to view and what programs to use.
You will find that your school account gives you access to many amenities. You have a Microsoft account to access Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and OneDrive. This account also doubles as a Gmail account, allowing access to all Google services. Your login will be the same for most of your school related accounts. Email, Canvas, the Knight App, etc all use this account. You can download Microsoft and Google-associated apps, such as Microsoft Word or Google Docs, via the app store on your iPad.
What Else is Included?
When you receive your iPad it will come with some equipment; a keyboard case, an apple pencil, a charging cable, and a charging block. You will be accountable for taking care of all these items. If you return your iPad to the school you will need to return these items with it.
New to Apple?
Not everyone is familiar with Apple devices, so here are a few tips to get you started:
- Your iPad charges from a USB C cable. This charging port is becoming common among other mobile devices. If you use a recent Android phone or a Nintendo Switch you will notice that this charging cable fits the charging ports. Please do not use Apple charging cables to charge other devices. They charge at a higher wattage than other cables and may decrease the battery life of other mobile devices.
- Apple products use encryption in their devices to keep all of your files safe, but if you forget your iPad password and you are not connected to Wi-Fi we cannot help you get back into your iPad unless we restore it to factory settings, which will remove all user data on it. To avoid this problem, always keep your iPad's files backed up and make sure to note down your passwords in a safe location when you change them. If you experience a password issue, please come see us in the office.
- On Windows computers, there are keyboard commands to copy and paste among other functions. On PC these commands use the "CTRL" or control key. Apple keyboards have a different layout. They use the "command" ⌘ key instead. (ex. ⌘+c is copy and ⌘+v is paste) You can find all of the commands used by Apple in this article.
- If you don't like using Safari or any of the other default Apple apps, you can change your default apps for internet browsing, email, calendar, etc in the settings menu.
- On your iPad pro, you can switch between apps in a few ways. One way is to swipe four fingers horizontally across the screen. This will tab between the different apps you have running in the background. To see all of the apps that are open on the device, swipe all the way up from the bottom of the screen. You will be able to see every screen you have open in miniature. If you swipe up only a little bit from the bottom, a small menu will appear that you can choose apps from. You can place the apps that you use often on this bar for easy access. You can also split your screen to use two apps at the same time. This is helpful for taking notes for remote classes since Zoom will turn off the camera when it is not on screen. Some browsers like Google Chrome and Safari also allow you to split the screen between two windows as well.
- Your apple pencil is magnetic and will cling to the edge of your iPad where the volume buttons are. The pencil charges when it is connected to your iPad. Unfortunately, the magnets in your pencil are not very strong; the pencils are easy to lose, so make sure you keep track of it to avoid incurring fees for missing equipment.
How to Care for Your Device
iPads are fragile items and they need to be handled with care. You will be responsible for any damages to your iPad, so you will want to provide it with the best care possible. Here are some tips that will help you take care of your iPad:
- Keep your iPad in its keyboard case at all times. Please use caution if choosing an alternate case for your iPad to ensure it fits properly and is the right configuration for your iPad model.
- Keep your electronic equipment away from food and water. Sometimes water damage does not cause immediate harm to an iPad, but will degrade its functionality over time.
- Maintain your iPads at a regular temperature. If your iPad was left in a cold place, let it warm up before turning it on. Do not use it in places where it would overheat or leave it in your car. Extreme temperatures will cause damage to your device.
- Be careful handling your iPad, even when it is in your bag. Do not throw or sit on a bag with an iPad inside. Try to avoid sending your iPad in checked luggage if you travel with it to prevent it from being damaged or stolen.
- Placing heavy items on top of, or in a bag with, an iPad may cause the casing of the iPad to bend over time. This damage, though subtle, can cause issues over time and incur damage fees on return.
- Do not leave your iPad unattended in public spaces.
- When you are not using your iPad, please lay it flat on a solid surface like a desk or a shelf, not in a bag.
- Avoid humid environments like the bathroom or a sports bag. The keyboard is especially susceptible to high levels of humidity and will fray and wrinkle or stop working as a result.
- Stickers will damage the surface of your keyboard, and may leave residue on other forms of equipment. If you end up returning your device to the school before you graduate, you will be charged a fine for causing these damages to your equipment. Please don't use stickers.
If you follow these steps, your iPad is sure to stay in great shape.
iPad Damage
Please note that if you return your iPad or equipment with the following damages, you will have to pay some fees:

- Damage to the iPad equipment
fraying material on keyboards, dents on the Apple Pencil, and other damage to cords and charging blocks.
- Defacing of iPad or iPad equipment
