Congratulations!

So you've graduated from SVU! We are so proud of your accomplishments and we're excited for the future ahead of you.

All graduating seniors may keep their iPads and associated equipment as a gift from the school. However, for this iPad to be fully released to you, we have to remove it from remote management. If you are still on campus, we can complete this process for you at the IT office. Please stop in between the hours of 9am-12pm or 1pm-5pm or make an appointment to see us. However, we know that not every senior will be able to see us in person for this process. It is our hope that this online guide will make it easy to remove your iPad from remote management from the comfort of your own home.

Backing up your data:

Remote management is something that a user enters into when they first set up their device. This means, if we want to remove it we have to reset the device to factory settings in the process. Luckily apple makes it easy to save and restore the files stored on your device through the iCloud backup and it is also possible to back up your information on your Mac or PC if you have one available. Please make sure all of your files are backed up while removing remote management from your device.

Follow these instructions if you are not familiar with how to backup your files to iCloud.

  • Be sure to connect your device to the wifi since you will be transferring a lot of data
  • Go into the settings on your iPad and select the iCloud app.
  • From the iCloud settings you will want to select "iCloud backup" and "Backup Now"

Once the iPad When you restore your ipad later after you set up this iCloud backup, the cloud will automatically restore all of your files and information. If the backup exceeds the capacity of your iCloud storage, you might consider paying for more room or backing up on a Mac or PC instead at your own discretion.

Disclaimer: There are some programs that save their files in the app storage instead of saving them to your files or cloud service. One of these programs is Procreate which is used by many art students on campus. We recommend that you try to export your projects to your files if you would like to keep your work.

Restoring your Ipad to Factory Settings:

In order to restore your iPad you will need access to a mac computer or a PC that has iTunes installed. Make sure that your operating system is updated and that you have the most recent version of iTunes. Once you're sure your computer is up to date, take the following steps:

  • Open Finder or iTunes on your computer.
  • Connect your iPad to the computer.
  • Enter your iPad's  passcode to trust the computer.
  • Select your device under "locations"
  • Sign out of your iPad in the settings menu and turn off "find my device" for your ipad (you can turn this on again after you have restored your ipad)
  • Select "restore iPad" and confirm again when the pop-up asks you if you're sure.
  • Your ipad will reset, please keep it on the charger while it is going through this process.

Setting up your iPad without remote management:

Resetting the iPad to its factory settings will allow you to make different choices in the initial setup of your device that you made when you set it up as a student. Please complete the following steps to make sure your iPad is not under remote management.

  • Turn on the iPad.
  • Select your language and region
  • Log into your trusted wifi at home.
  • You will be asked whether you want to transfer apps and data. You do not want to transfer your apps and data. This will cause the remote management to stay on the iPad. You can transfer your files later when you restore through the icloud.
  • You will be asked to sign into your apple account, use the same account you made the backup on.
  • Follow through the rest of the setup choices as you like.

With that the iPad is officially free of remote management. From this point on it is your personal property.
