Files
Make sure to check your files listed under "On My iPad" and move the ones you'd like to keep to "iCloud Drive". Any files left under "On My iPad" will be erased once the iPad is restored.
Backing up the iPad
After you've moved any files to the iCloud folder, you need to backup the device. Go to the Settings app, select your Apple ID Profile, and select "iCloud"
Select "iCloud Backup"
Make sure iCloud Backup is turned by selecting the switch. It should automatically backup your device if it wasn't turned on already. If it was already turned on select "Back Up Now" to get the latest backup of your iPad. Once the backup is complete, a message will be listed underneath "Back Up Now" that says "Last successful backup" that will say when the backup was completed.
Now that you've backed up your data, you may now proceed in following the instructions emailed to you for the release of your iPad.
